At the restaurant through the ice

Once the train attendant check my ticket and ask me to confirm I will leave the train in Chita, more or less in the middle of the night (at 4:23) I decide to celebrate my return on the Trans-Siberian wagons, going at the restaurant. There are only two cars to cross to reach it but is not so smooth. Outside is very cold and between one car and the other, there are clear signs of the freezing climate. The doors are surrounded by ice, as you may see in the picture (a larger one is in the photo-gallery below). I didn’t expect to have to wear a jacket to reach the restaurant and I’m wearing a t-shirt and of course, I can’t open easily the doors whose handles are probably a bit blocked. In the end I reach the restaurant. I love all the train restaurants but especially the one on Trans-Siberian. Food is not amazing but is not even too bad considering that you are in the middle of nothing and that outside there is -22°. Two pictures show you the restaurant and my dish. If you see also my laptop is because I’m using long time on the train to refresh the aspect of my website.

Few hours of sleep and then outside in the cold

When I’m full enough of food and beer, I go back to my place. Don’t know why, but I don’t feel cold this time. When the train arrives in Khilok I’m still working at my computer, I don’t need anything and therefore I stay inside in spite of long stop. I should say that is pretty common, along the Trans-Siberian, to go outside on long stops to buy food, to smoke or just to have a walk in the “fresh” air, but tonight air is really too fresh. I think at least -25°. I go to bed but I don’t sleep so much. I’m too excited and of course, as always in this situations, I fall asleep just a couple of minutes before the attendant knocks at my door to inform me that Chita is not so far. I jump out of bed and once outside I face the harsh temperature in the dark night. It looks like arrival of the train and its passengers are bringing life in this lonely place. Chita is quite a big town and its station is surely important but at 4:30 AM, without a train would be surely desolate. There are few taxis that I ignore because I think the hotel is not so far. Yes, this is what I think…
While I’m walking alone in the dark and cold night of Chita I leave you with the gallery of best photos I took during this leg of my trip.
